Lemon Balm

Lemon Balm is a sweetly lemon-mint scented plant that is easy to grow. Cut the plants back when they start blooming if you don’t want it to self seed. Use it in teas, mixed drinks and salads. Lemon balm has anti-viral action in lab tests against herpes simplex, mumps, and other viruses. Also a sedative, calmative, and carminative.

Lemon Balm

  Lemon Balm is a member of the mint family but has a strong lemony scent. It’s great in herbal tea and also chopped and mixed into fruit salads for a citrusy herbal zest.  Lemon balm loves full sun and well draining soil.  Plant seeds directly after last threat of frost ¼ inch deep.  Space plants about 12-18 inches apart. It prefers regular water for best results. Harvest leaves once the plant is established.  Many say the strongest medicinal effects are after the plant flowers, when the lemon oil content is the highest.  Grow this in a container or contained part of your garden to keep it from invading and taking over, it is like mint in that way.  To help preserve soil moisture, mulch around the plants.  To preserve over winter, mulch again at the end of the season.
