Watermelon growing info:

Watermelons are native to Africa but can be grown anywhere with a little bit of know how and effort.  Plants can be started indoors in cold climates 6-8 weeks before the average last frost date.  Bigger vines mean bigger sweeter fruits and in areas where the season is short this is essential to get really any yield.  Plant in well draining soil amended with lots of compost and mulch to help with soil moisture.  Many people in cold climates mulch with black plastic which not only retains moisture but it helps heat the soil which is great for watermelons. Transplant carefully to avoid damaging the roots about 2-3 weeks after average last frost date. Space plants 36-60 inches apart depending on the variety. Melons in general are heat loving frost intolerant plants.  Remove any blossoms that appear before 50 days to encourage proper vine growth. They require a long hot growing season for the best fruit. Add mulch or straw or cardboard under forming fruits to avoid rot. They also require constant water.  A hack for sweeter melons is to occasionally water with sugar dissolved in the water during the fruit forming stage. Harvest when they are full sized according to the variety and the skin goes from shiny to dull.
