Scallions are great to grow for those who want the flavor of onions without the long wait of growing onions from start to finish. They prefer sandy well drained soil. Broadcast seeds outdoors, or start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before average last frost date, about ¼ inch deep into the soil. It’ll take about 7-14 days for the seeds to sprout. Transplant outside after the last threat of frost about 2 inches apart in an area with full sun. Scallions can tolerate partial shade. Water often for best results. Scallions are tender and mild when young. You can hill up around them to make them grow bigger if you’d like. Scallions need constant weed protection and a lot of water because of their shallow root system. When removing weeds, take care to not disturb the roots of the onions.
