Tomatillo growing info:
Tomatillos are the citrusy fun cousin to tomatoes which grow inside of their very own lantern. Also, tomatillo flowers are some of the prettiest you will have in your vegetable garden. Start seeds ¼ inch deep about 8-10 weeks before the last frost. You need at least 2 plants as tomatillos are not self pollinating. Most gardens have between 4-6 plants for their tomatillo needs. To help with pollination, plant nasturtiums and marigolds nearby to attract more pollinators. They are heat loving plants that thrive in full sun conditions with rich but well draining soil. Space plants 36 inches apart when you transplant them outside and bury plants about 2/3 deep to help bolster a strong stem. These are great for container gardens. Tomatillos can tolerate drought but prefer regular watering especially while the fruit is forming. Harvest the fruits when the lanterns start to split. You can plant onions nearby, also, for pest control.
