Lettuce growing info:
Lettuce is easy to grow, especially in containers for those limited on space! Lettuce is a cold hardy, cold climate crop which means it does best during the cold parts of the season. Sow seeds directly by broadcasting across the soil or start indoors a few weeks early and carefully transplant outdoors. Lettuce prefers a well draining nitrogen rich soil and plenty of water to grow. You can harvest outer leaves as soon as the plant is established or allow it to develop further and harvest all at once. Space 6-12 inches apart depending on the variety. In hot weather it is known to bolt and flower which ruins the flavor of lettuce and makes it very bitter. If it flowers, just let it produce seed and collect those for the next growing cycle. Lettuce of any kind makes an excellent microgreen. Baby lettuce is ready 21 days from germination. While lettuce is cold hardy, its sensitive to frost and needs to be grown in cold frames when there is danger of frost.
